Getting Started with PromptFence

Step 1: Sign Up and Create Your Organization

Visit our checkout page to create your account. Provide your email, company name, and estimated number of users. You'll be redirected to Stripe to complete payment setup.

Step 2: Access Your Dashboard

After checkout, you'll receive an email with a magic link to access your dashboard at app.promptfence.io. The dashboard is where you'll manage users, configure policies, and view audit logs.

Step 3: Invite Team Members

From your dashboard, navigate to the "Users" tab and click "Invite User". Enter their email address and they'll receive an invitation with a unique activation token. Each user needs their own token to activate the browser extension.

Step 4: Configure Policies

Go to "Settings" in your dashboard to configure blocking policies. You can enable/disable paste blocking, file upload blocking, customize warning messages, whitelist specific AI platforms, and set custom detection patterns for sensitive data.

Step 5: Deploy the Extension

Team members receive their invite email with installation instructions. They click the link, install the browser extension from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons, and enter their unique user token to activate protection.

Step 6: Monitor Activity

Return to your dashboard to view real-time event logs, see which users are actively protected, and review blocked actions. Events are retained for 90 days and can be exported as CSV for compliance reporting.

Team Management

Inviting New Users

From your dashboard, go to the "Users" tab and click "Invite User". Enter the team member's email address. They'll receive an email with their unique activation token and installation instructions. There's no limit to the number of users you can invite.

Managing User Status

The Users tab shows all invited team members, their activation status, last active date, and activity counts. All active (provisioned) users count as billable seats in your monthly billing.

Removing Users

To remove a user, click the "Remove" button next to their name in the Users tab. This immediately deactivates their extension and prevents further usage. Their historical event data is retained for audit purposes and they will no longer count as a billable seat.

User Roles and Permissions

Currently, all dashboard users have admin privileges and can invite/remove users, configure policies, and view all event logs. Additional role-based access controls for "member" vs "admin" roles are coming in a future update.

Regenerating User Tokens

If a user loses their token or you need to revoke access temporarily, you can generate a new token from the Users tab. The old token will be immediately invalidated. Send the new token to the user via a secure channel.

Viewing User Activity

The Events tab shows all blocked actions across your organization. You can filter by user email to see activity for specific team members. Each event shows the timestamp, website, action type, and which policy triggered the block.

Exporting User Data

From the Events tab, click "Export CSV" to download all event logs for compliance reporting. The export includes timestamps, user emails, websites, and action types. Actual prompt content is never logged or exported.

Configuring Per-User Settings

Policies currently apply organization-wide. If you need user-specific exemptions (e.g., allowing the security team to use AI tools unrestricted), contact support for custom configuration options available to enterprise customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does PromptFence work?

PromptFence is a browser extension that monitors when users attempt to paste content or upload files to AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and others. Based on your organization's policies, it can block these actions or show warnings to prevent sensitive data from being shared with AI tools.

Which browsers are supported?

PromptFence works on Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox. The extension can be deployed to your team through your organization's admin dashboard.

Does PromptFence store my prompts or data?

It's your choice. By default, PromptFence logs metadata only (timestamp, site, user, action type). Administrators can enable full prompt logging for compliance and audit purposes. See our Data Retention Policy for details.

How do I install the extension for my team?

After signing up, each team member receives an invitation email with a unique user token. They click the link, install the browser extension, and enter their token to activate protection. Administrators can manage users through the dashboard.

Can I customize which sites are blocked?

Yes. Administrators can configure custom blocking policies, including site-specific rules and custom text patterns to detect in the dashboard settings.

What happens when content is blocked?

When a user attempts a blocked action (like pasting sensitive data), they see a branded PromptFence notification explaining why the action was blocked. The event is logged in your admin dashboard for audit purposes.

How is pricing calculated?

PromptFence uses user-based pricing at $9.99/user/month. Save 15% with annual billing at $8.49/user/month. You pay for users who have been invited and activated.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. There are no long-term contracts. You can cancel your subscription at any time through the billing portal in your dashboard settings.

Do you offer enterprise support?

Yes. Organizations with 500+ users receive dedicated support and can request custom onboarding. Contact our sales team at [email protected] for enterprise pricing.

What if a user needs to use AI for work?

Administrators can configure policies to show warnings instead of hard blocks, allowing users to acknowledge the risk and proceed. You can also whitelist specific AI tools or disable enforcement for specific users.
